Minustellu Corsican grape: what is special about this variety

SENSORIAL PROFILE

Wines made from Minustellu are very colorful, with a beautiful intense red color reminiscent of black cherry with violet reflections.

Their nose is expressive without being exuberant, with notes of black fruits (blackberry, blueberry), small red fruits (cherry), dried fruits (almond) with slight spicy or balsamic notes (mint) or smoky (cocoa) and sometimes floral (violet).

On the palate, after a nice “attack,” they present substance, with present but soft and silky tannins.

This grape variety can be used pure or blended. It will reinforce the structure of Sciaccarellu and round out that of Niellucciu without modifying their typicality. The resulting wine is pleasant, expressive, and balanced.

Minustellu musts, with their bright and sustained color, can also enhance certain rosés that are too pale.

A great red wine, with fine and delicious relief, punchy with energy and precision.

ALPA Corsican Red wine Minustellu has a beautiful robe between violet and purple, scents of the maquis where the smoked cade appears upfront, followed by hints of sage, thyme, and iodine, before speaking to us  red berries reminiscent of arbutus and blackberry. In short, a concentrate of Corsica…

In the mouth, the freshness surprises with its delicacy. This delicacy subtly highlights the aromas of red and black fruits, tinged with oriental spices like sandalwood and cubeb pepper. Orientalism that transforms the arbutus into mangosteen. All surrounded by a veil of smoke mixed with slightly salty sea spray.

ALPA Minestellu reveals itself best after 2 to 3 years in the bottle. A beautiful bottle for dishes such as grills accompanied by piperade, but also some seafood products such as octopus salad and linguine with lightly tomatoed clams. In autumn, delicate game meats such as venison and poultry with woodland mushrooms accompany it gracefully. A very nice discovery from ALPA Winery, the result is of a very high standard. The wines are juicy, refined, infused, and of incredible class every time! ALPA works here with a flagship grape of Corsica that I particularly appreciate: the Minustellu.

It has the peculiarity of ripening very late and developing aromas of red fruits and cocoa nibs. The good idea is to have aged the Corsican red wine Minustellu  in a 1/2 muid, a kind of 500-liter barrel that brings a lot of substance and density to the wine. It is a fleshy, spicy wine that despite its relatively young age shows all its potential. Open it in 2/3 years with a leg of lamb, you will see the harmony will be sumptuous. The juicy mouth is of beautiful delicacy, elegant, flavorful, and persistent. A very pretty wine with velvety sweetness. In the mouth, we enjoy a beautiful combination of fruits, undergrowth, floral notes, macerated cherries.

There is a very salivating texture, tannin, but at the same time the substance presents a certain silkiness, it is long in the mouth, it is bloody and saline. Bring out your best cold cuts quickly to accompany this beautiful discovery of a native grape variety, even with grills!
