Vermentinu Corsican Grape : how to recognize and taste it
SENSORIAL PROFILE
ᨏ
Vermentinu is certainly the most precious white grape variety in Corsica and Mediterranean vineyards. It produces high-end white wines, usually pale yellow with greenish reflections, with an elegant and complex nose where notes of white flowers (hawthorn, acacia), yellow flowers (broom) blend with those of white fruits (pear, apple, quince), dried fruits (almond), citrus, and exotic fruits.
In the mouth, they are perfectly balanced, ample, and long, sometimes mineral in character. It is an eclectic grape variety that can explore many winemaking paths and produce very different styles of wines (wood, concrete egg, residual sugars).

The Vermentino grape variety, or Vermentinu, was widely spread in Italy, Sardinia, and especially in Corsica. Since Vermentino ripens late, its development requires a warm climate, and its cultivation can only be carried out in regions well-exposed to the sun.
Conversely, cold or temperate climates do not allow it to ripen properly. Vermentinu is only sensitive to powdery mildew. When vinified alone, Vermentino produces a single-varietal dry white wine, both light and full-bodied, presenting a pale yellow color. It can be used in blends with other grape varieties.
In this case, due to its low acidity, it brings lightness and freshness to the wines. Vermentinu belongs to the grape varieties of Corsican wines. The aromas released by this grape variety are multiple. One can detect notes of fresh apple, green almond, sweet spices, hawthorn, ripe pear, and fresh pineapple. Present in all appellations in Corsica, Vermentinu or Vermentino is an ancient white grape variety that developed at the beginning of our era in Greece before being planted in Italy, Sardinia, and Corsica.
Better known as Rolle in Provence and Languedoc, or Malvoisie in Spain, it occupies a prominent place in Mediterranean white wines. A gastronomic wine. Vermentinu grape variety produces dry wines of beautiful intensity with floral, fruit, and citrus notes. With a few years of aging in the bottle, the wine gains complexity. Among the best producers: the ALPA house.

It thrives in hot regions, on dry and infertile soil. It ensures regular production. It brings quality and personality to white wines. Corsican white wine is produced on the French Mediterranean island. Corsican vineyards are located in the mountainous areas of the center and south of the island.
The main grape varieties used to produce Corsican white wine are Vermentino, Roussanne, and Grenache Blanc. The Mediterranean climate favors the production of fruity and dry wines. Corsican white wine is usually served with seafood, salads, or cheeses. White wines have a “star variety,” the main grape variety of all the AOCs produced in Corsica: Vermentino (or Vermentinu, or Corsican Malvoisie, or Rolle). It is found planted on no less than 1,150 hectares of vineyards, representing 17% of the area, in all regions of the island.
The Corsican climate guarantees optimal development conditions for this late-ripening grape variety well known in Italy. Indeed, it finds in its original Corsican lands its best expression ground. With good adaptation capabilities to the various soils of the island, it brings great finesse to the wines, and powerful aromas (particularly of white flowers and citrus). The productions are very distinctive and marked by the smoothness and richness in the mouth. Its low acidity often leads winemakers to blend it with other grape varieties such as Ugni Blanc to bring enough freshness to the wine.
