In Corsica, we have 9 regional appellations (the best known that you will easily find on the continent is Patrimonio), 1 IGP (island of beauty) 4 cooperative cellars and 134 winegrowers.
So where to start to discover Corsican wine?
With some exceptions, IGP island of beauty wines are often produced by cooperative cellars in very large volumes and focused on rosé wines (80% of production): these are the ones you find in supermarkets at the lowest price. Example of cooperative IGPs: Casanova, Terra Vecchia, Réserve du Président.
These wines have the merit of existing and adapting to small wallets, but they come from yield grapes, so they are not representative of the grape varieties worked by the island’s winegrowers.
I say “with some exceptions” because my white wine Vertu is IGP! Of course, the grapes come from several regions on the island, but they are grapes from estates worked according to the criteria of the AOP.
The Patrimonio appellation mainly works with Niellucciu, a very animal grape variety, which can please or strongly displease. So I do not necessarily recommend it to you either to discover Corsican wine.
So which estates should you choose to discover Corsican wine? I want to tell you all about Corsican wine! I recommend in particular the Arena de Patriminio houses (excluding Niellucciu), Canarelli de Figari, and Abbatucci.
Otherwise, without advertising myself, you can taste the Signature Parcellaire ALPA range.
I made these wines precisely to make you discover the taste of Corsican wine. The grapes come from AOP estates that work the island’s representative terroirs: granite, clay-limestone, schist, sand, etc.
Each terroir brings a specific identity to the wine, and the blends of minerals give it a magical balance.
You can order my island blended wines directly from the producer on my online store from 11 euros. My first two vintages are just ready.
I also make single-varietal, single-terroir wines from exceptional plots. There you can taste a single terroir.
The two approaches are complementary to discover the taste of Corsican wine.
So, ready to taste? Don’t hesitate to give me your tasting comments.
